San Juan Islands Birthday Getaway

This weekend was awesome.  Anthony planned a 'surprise' trip to the San Juan Islands for my birthday.  (Note:  it's not my birthday yet!  I am 28 for two more days, playa!).

San Juan Islands?  Where diz islandz at?

Right on the upper corner of Washington!  Close enough to Canada to smuggle goods via kayak!

They are tiny, gorgeous, full of wildlife (although we didn't see much) and very cute.   (But way overpriced - bring your own food and wine!  And book stuff early!).    You can get there by taking a ferry from either Anacortes or Seattle unless you are Michael Phelps in a heated wetsuit and want to swim.

We played on da shore....

I decided I was a quarterback with an imaginary team.  We gotta get ready for football season, right?

We Kayaked....

I tried to race the guys in the kayak next to us.  After one of them puked from seasickness.   Sportsmanship is my specialty!

This is the "Lime Kiln" lighthouse.  Wonndefffull.
View from the Kayak.                       All in all 98% awesome.  We bought one bottle of terrible wine and on the ferry on the way back, we were passing the bottle back and forth.  The wine was terrible, but it was fun :).
The island felt like it was a world away which was amazing because it's about 3 hours from Seattle.  Four and a half out of five stars!  Would visit again!

What was the last or best escape you went on?

If you've ever been to the Pacific Northwest Forests, do you feel like the Keebler Elves probably live there?
Every time I visit the area, I feel like one is going to jump out and offer me an El Fudge or Grasshopper cookie.

Or maybe that's just wishful thinking...

  1. Wow! Looks like a beautiful place to visit! Getaways are awesome! I felt the same about Montreal. It seemed like I was in Europe, but in reality only a 2 hour flight away from Chicago.

Happy birthday! Enjoy being 28 for the next 2 days. I've been 29 for 5 days now and feel old and tired. Lol

  2. Awww that's so sweet!! Happy (early) birthday!!! We have an "escape" to Vegas coming up. Ok ok, we're going for a wedding, but we're going early to celebrate (very belatedly) our 1 year anniversary of being married. Or I guess, 1 1/2 year anniversary at this point.

  3. 1. I love how A dresses up for your bday and you dress down. 2. Looks like an awesome trip! 3. Once we were in the Black Forest in Germany, and I was super excited bc that is where the Gummi Bears live and nobody else seemed as excited (maybe they hadnt watched that cartoon, but in real life they are also made there, so I am not crazy). Anyways, I totally understand your excitement/wishful thinking about the Keebler elves.

  4. seriously awesome pics. what a fun birthday surprise :)

  5. Wow! What great pictures. It looks so beautiful there. I love the light house. Happy earlyish birthday!

  6. That's awesome!! DID you smuggle anything over in your kayaks?

  7. This looks like so much fun!! You should totally come to Canada and smuggle ME so I can join you on your getaway!!

My last and best getaway was in Hawaii last summer. It was the best experience of my entire life.

  8. the keebler elves wouldn't offer u a choco snack, they'd swipe u and throw u into those cookies! how do u think they get the diff poses for their El Fudge sandwiches? jk.

that's so much fun tho, i've been kayaking once ant it was a BLAST!!!

  9. Wow that's an awesome birthday gift! Happy early birthday! Looks like a fun trip!
