Gimp Day 1: The Epsom Salt Muscle Miracle...

Thank you so so much for your sweet comments and suggestions on my injury.  I am trying to come back as soon as possible!  Hopefully soon!

In fact, today, I lifted my gimpy self out of bed and headed to sell my soul use the elliptical.  To me, there is no more boring form of exercise, or other form of exercise where you feel like you are doing absolutely nothing like the elliptical.

..........zzzzzzzzzzzzzz ......

But that's ok.  It was actually kind of refreshing to not try at all.  I could get used to this!  And it didn't barely hurt!  60 minutes later, and I am much more up to date on the hard hitting issues from morning TV (thank you, Today Show...PS: why is Star Jones a business commentator again?).

But the reason I feel a ton better isn't just because I used the elliptical....
Yesterday, my friend Anisa told me to use Epsom Salts.

Now...I had no idea what those are!  They sound like something you'd have on the Oregon Trail in 1850.

But...desperate times call for desperate measures, my friends.
=)

So last night, I stopped by the Target and bought a ton of drugs:  Aspirin, Cortozone, and Epsom Salts.

When I got home, my roommate laughed at me as I told her I was going to prepare my salt bath.  But I was on a mission....I dumped a few cups of those suckers in the bath and soaked away.

OMG, Y'all....
Let's just say those people in the 1850s knew what they were doing.  I felt SO much better.  I did another soak this morning as well.  No shame.

The only problem is that Epsom Salts relax ALL of your muscles:

Um yeah.  Sorry...kind of gross....Totally worth it though.  =)

My side felt so much better afterwards and I am now a fan for life!  Plus it was only 3 bucks at Target.

Do you have any random cures that you use and swear by?  Besides drinking Ginger Ale when I'm sick (thanks mom), this is my new one!

  1. oh GOOD I'm glad this helped, I was getting a lil nervous there!

I did the elliptical a little last year when I had that stress fracture and it was a great opportunity to read books and watch news on the TV haha.

  2. OMG! I have been suffering from a leg muscle pull for 4 weeks! I am going home tonight to try this! My husband mentioned it to me (he noticed the Epsom salt in the store)but of course I didn't believe him.

  3. I agree, the elliptical is the worst. However, I do get my sweat on every time I use it. And, catching up on crappy TV makes the time go faster. You can also get in a good podcast or two on that thang.

  5. Glad to see you're on the mend! I thought Epsom Salt was just a placebo type thing. Ifargot sweats by it, it must be worth checking out :) Can't beat $3 either

  6. I break my elliptisizing up into 5 or ten minute forward and backward intervals and make the time fly by with my kindle or watching tv shows I missed. Hope that helps? but more than that I hope you get better fast!

  7. Haha, I loved this post! I've never used Epsom salts probably for the same reason you didn't - I thought it was some old fogey cure that would be all weird. Now I must give it a try while being on the lookout for other "relaxed muscles".

Oh, and yeah - the elliptical is torture. Easy, but pure torture. I just want to run instead.

  8. oh, SO glad that those salts are helping! i've never heard of that one, but i'll definitely give it a go if i'm hurting!

ya, the elliptical is my top pick for cross training, i have a love/hate with it because usually i'm using it because i'm injured so i'm angry. but u can get in an awesome workout on there and u can maintain good shape on it too. plus, it's good even if u're not injured and want/need the low impact.

that said, love the star jones comment!!

  11. A friend recommended epsom salt to me, too. But, like you, thought it was something from the 1850s. I guess I'll give it a shot. Glad you are feeling better!

  14. Yay! Glad you are on the mend! My grandma's cure for everything is to put a potato on it. I will save you the time and tell you 9/10 this does not work, or maybe I am just immune to potatoes :). Sleep is my favorite cure-all!

  17. :) De-lurking to pass along my fave remedy. Get some Arnicia gel (I get mine at Whole Foods but they have it in some drugstores.) It's been my savior during marathon training. It's all natural and works to make muscle inflammation go away.

  19. We actually used them for our old GSP's paws when he was having lots of issues (that never resolved, but anyway).

Epsom salts are kind of all-purpose-awesome. Like baking soda.
