Shoe Discount Hunting, Treadmill Tempos!

Hope you're having a good weekend!

My weekends always take the same emotional roller coaster when it comes to how they feel long at the beginning of the weekend and very short at the end!  It's hard to explain exactly so I made a graphic since a picture is worth 1000 words:

Don't get me wrong...I actually really like my job, as jobs go.  I just like my weekends eveennn betterrrrr.  =).

Today I couldn't stomach going to the track for a workout, so instead, I headed to my apartment gym for a little tempo on the treadmill.

The good thing about the treadmill?  It's really easy to run negative splits!  You just hit that down button....
Workout: 1 Mile Warmup, 4.5 Miles , .5 incline @ 7:24, 7:19, 7:12, 7:08, 7:03 (.5 miles), mile cool down.

Another good thing?  I can watch ABC family "That's so Raven" while running my heart out and sweating up a storm.  It's actually not bad, I swear!

The real OC...public library!
According to this Runners World Article, half marathon training tempos should be more like 6-8 miles and probably a little slower than I ran, unless I'm planning for a 7:15 pace half which would be heck of an awesome PR but is probably out of the question.

I felt ok about my workout performance though...even happy perhaps?

Treadmill speed can be deceiving for me though...sometimes I feel like it's a lot easier for me to click off fast miles on the 'mill' than outside.

The rest of my day included birthday present shopping, and getting my Orange County library card!  Dorks unite!

I also purchased another pair of Mizuno Inspires.  I've had my old pair for about 10 weeks and I'd like to have new ones to phase into the rotation soon.

Instead of going to my local running store, I went where any bargain hunter would go...Ebay!
I hit the jackpot! I bought the older model, but hey, that's cool with me.  I ran in them a year ago successfully so I'm sure they will be fine now.
$65 Dollar Mizuno Inspires!
The Inspire

These days, between Zappos, Endless.com, Ebay, etc, there are a million places to get running shoes if you know exactly what you want.  And they likely have a coupon code available.

That said, I can't help but feel a little guilty.  I want to support the little guy running shops, but if I can get the same thing for considerably less....sigh.....

::suddenly feels responsible for the possible end of small cool independent running stores..::

So two questions:

What is harder for you physically?  Running outside or on a treadmill?
I can usually go faster with less effort on the treadmill

Do you buy your shoes from running stores?  Or are you a discount monger like me, selling out to the lowest price!? =)

Have a great Saturday Night / Sunday, y'all!

  1. After so many months of only running on a treadmill (and hopefully many more to come!) I have come to realize that I LOVE the treadmill, however I don't really find it easier- it's just because I'm so used to it now.

Some days it seems easy and others not so much, which isn't any differently than I felt about outdoor running. On the treadmill it's easy to hit your pace because you can punch in whatever pace you want. However that doesn't mean I can punch in a 6min/mile hahaha- I cannot run any faster or further on the treadmill than I can outdoors- and I always use some incline to "simulate" the outdoors.

I guess after so long of only treadmill running I have enough mind games and special techniques to make is not boring and I have long ago surpassed that "dreadmill" feeling. Running inside now is just as much fun as running outdoors used to be. I guess you can get used to anything after a certain amount of time. I even watch the clock sometimes, especially near the end of a long run, it's like hypnotic or something to watch the time go by second by second.

But I don't think it's easier- only if you run on 0% incline (which is basically like running downhill) :D! I do think what is easier is having access to the bathroom when I want, my water bottle, a towel . . . I hate having to try to find a bathroom in a park.

  2. I use to love the treadmill! Then eventually I switched to running outdoors. Did that for about 8 months w/o running on the treadmill then went back on the treadmill and hated it! I guess I got accustomed to running outdoors. I can run 5 miles easy outdoors. When It comes to running 5 miles on the treadmill....That's another story. lol

I'm in need of more followers! I'm going to have a giveaway soon :) http://runningfitnesshealth.blogspot.com/

  3. I don't have a tread mill or belong to a gym so it's all outside for me. I am saving for a treadmill though, I am sure I will like running outside better but it is nice to have a backup plan!
I am a discount she buyer, I can't help it, I am on a budget!

  4. For some reason, it's harder for me to run on a treadmill than outside! I have no idea what the problem is. If it's 0% incline, it's about the same, but I always run with at least 1% incline. My outdoors running routes always have tons of hills mixed in and for some reason that's easier than 1% on a treadmill? I don't get it.

I try to buy my running gear at my favorite local running store, but if there's an incredible deal online, I'll go with that. I need to pay rent, too! :)

  5. The treadmill is definitely easier for me, even with 1% incline it seems faster than outside! But I'm starting to run outside more and more since it's more interesting!
I'm all about the discounts...I just want the cheapest option most of the time!
    :)

  6. I just went on an online shopping binge and bought THREE pairs of running shoes!

I have almost 600 miles on my current shoes (I know, I really need a new pair). Needless to say, it had been a long time since I'd been shopping!

I really like your Mizunos, I got a pair that was one of my three!

  7. I am an outside runner ALL the way. I hate the treadmill with every fiber of my being...okay that is a little harsh but I really get discouraged when the weather sucks and I know I have to bust out a treadmill workout. The only plus is that I probably sweat out 5 pounds when on the treadmill versus outdoors :)

I have my favorite running shoes so I usually buy them online for the cheapest price...I try not to spend over $80 for my shoes if possible.

  8. Treadmill is easier but I hate it. I almost always buy my shoes online at the cheapest place. Not sure if you know about ebates.com but you can get even more of a discount because they pay you to shop. Ebay included!

  9. When I lived in the US I never sought out a deal for running shoes because I was too lazy and just went to the LRS. Now I found 2 pairs that I love so I'm using Amazon, or if I'm lucky enough to get a coupon I'll still go to the LRS.

But LRS's in France are really lame- last time the guy told me I could wear my Ghost 3's for a year and I was totally shocked and I wanted to say yeah if I only ran one mile a day hahaha, but I didn't because I can only be rude in my head and not out loud hehehe :D.

  10. Saw a link to your blog from SR's blog. Depending on your size (8.5 or 9?), I'd like to see if I can buy your phased out pair of Wave Inspires. Love that style, and it would be helpful to have for my gf as an extra pair of runners.

    Thanks.
